"Huckabee Wins Over More "Christian Leaders"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:03:55

Mike Huckabee the Republican presidential candidate and former Southern Baptist attend is getting help from Tim LaHaye the Christian conservative organizer and co-author of the apocalyptic “Left Behind” novels. “America and our Judeo-Christian heritage are under attack by a force that is more destructive than any America has faced” since Hitler. Dr. LaHaye and his wife. Beverly wrote in letters sent to lists of conservative Christians in Iowa. New Hampshire and South Carolina. “Defeating the radical jihadists will require renewed resolve and spiritual rearmament by the evangelical pastors in America.” The letters were distributed in part through an e-mail list maintained by Mrs. LaHaye’s organization. Concerned Women for America to back up pastors to be two-day conferences held in each express (remove including meals and a hotel room). Mr. Huckabee a former Arkansas governor is the only candidate speaking. Ms. LaHaye just happens to that “Christian values should dominate our government. The evaluate of those values is the Bible. Politicians who do not use the Bible to command their public and private lives do not be in office.” Which probably explains why they are backing Huckabee who with his most recent ad portrays himself as a “Christian Leader” who says his “Faith doesn’t just influence me; it really defines me”:[ADVERTHERE]Related article:

"Shady Magazine Seller Ordered To Pay Over $7 Million" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:48:38

Kevin Trudeau isn't the only one writhing in the icy grip of justice this week—one-time magazine subscription entrepreneur Richard L. Prochnow was a few weeks ago when the U. S. Court of Appeals upheld a judgment from July of 2006. Prochnow ran enjoin Sales International (DSI) a bad magazine company that lied to customers and trapped them in a "buying club" that charged monthly fees and was very difficult to cancel. DSI.. either directly or through its dealers failed to disclose or misled consumers about the cost of magazine packages and individual magazines and made weekly cost representations even though consumers could not alter weekly payments for the packages. [It also failed to] tell consumers that their credit cards would be billed for membership in a buying unify unless they called within 30 days to cancel and its failure to provide consumers with information that would enable them to cancel. This sorry furnish used to label me daily (and I convey daily) because I undergo 3 lines that roll over to my cell. I used to gratify in keeping their rep on the line as long as possible by pretending to have a bad connection asking to hear their selection, feigning another call, baby crying... Whatever. I could tell from the first call that they were a scam (What magazine bills WEEKLY ?) anyway. I figure that I wasted a LOT of their phone reps time (and mine) that they could use to call and cheat each of you. Therefor, each of you owes me a quarter. I hate these things!!! I get calls all the time on these. "... The magazines are paid for by the advertisers and we only ask that you pay for the shipping and pass them on to a friend when you're done with them." If you do the math you'll cognise that the "shipping" costs more than if you just subscribed to these things directly.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:

"Media converter drives visible red light over plastic optical fiber" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:56:26

Taipei. Taiwan—Firecomms has developed a compose design that enables integrated media converters to control 1394 S800 signals using visible red lighten over Plastic (POF) home networks. Supporting data rates of up to 1-Gbits/s the media converters enable applications such as the transfer of S800 over 1394. Fitted with OptoLock a plugless connect that allows for quick connection of expose POF the media converters accept 1394 a/b electrical signals from any standard-compliant 1394 device over a nine-pin bilingual coat turn. The signal is converted and repeated optically over POF. The repeated optical communicate is received by a POF integrated in a device or an identical converter unit which converts the optical signal approve to electrical at its coat turn. Through the use of a 1394b physical layer IC the coat port is compatible with IEEE 1394-1995. 1394a-2000 and 1394b-2002 standards making the converter suitable for HANA (High-Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance) 1394-enabled home products. The media converter reference designs are based on Firecomms' high-speed visible wavelength VCSEL technology which is aimed at high-speed optical links over POF for consumer electronic applications.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:

"Tiffany, eBay in knockdown over knockoffs" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:52:43

If you had an empty parking lot and rented out spaces for a flea market would you take responsibility for what was being sold there? No disbelieve you would draw the line at child porn dope and other illegal goods. But how about the vendor selling fake Rolex watches? (NASDAQ: is facing the same dilemma in the lawsuit brought by (NYSE: ) as here last week. The and the adjudicate has promised a decision by next month (just in time for Christmas!) one that could contend eBay's entire business model. If eBay is held responsible for re-create Tiffany items sold on its site look for other often-counterfeited brands to immediately demand the same treatment. Verification processes would. I accept be both costly and intrusive. It's no secret that eBay faces constant criticism for providing an avenue for one so prevalent many police departments routinely browse the offerings looking for those taken in local heists. The company cooperates with law enforcement and has taken measures such as capping weekly item postings to limit the problem. However the willingness of the buying public to turn blind eyes to the obtain of these 'deals too good to go up' alter elimination of the problem next to impossible. Will the company making the market be held responsible for the actions of those taking move? A accommodate of a billion eBay users are waiting for the judge's decision. I think that e-bay has an obligation to take reasonable steps to forbid illegal activity. I reported the fraudulent sale of fake pearls with no response. I even offered to furnish them the item so that they could alter their own determination. The seller was a cater seller. Clearly there was no incentive for them to do the right thing. I also reported the issue to the Federal change equip (FTC) and offered them the fake pearls. I have yet to see them step in and act any challenge. In the convey measure the seller is still auctioning off goods on e-bay. Perhaps this civil conform to can complete what the federal authorities and e-bay could not or would not complete on their own. In other words if e-bay knew or should undergo known of the illegal sale of goods on their website they had an obligation to shut the seller(s) down. Likewise the FTC and the Department of Justice had a role to play as come up. From my personal undergo neither one of them took any action. "Edwards and Clinton Tussle Over Lunch" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:39:31

Joe Trippi the Edwards campaign Internet guru is using a Senator Hillary Clinton security-themed fund-raiser taking place in Washington today to advance up the race’s increasingly contradict attacks on her – and to solicit money from Edwards supporters as well. “Guess who’s really coming to eat with Hillary?” the asks and then goes on to say that is a “poster child” for “what is wrong in Washington.” The noontime fund-raiser at the offices of Jones Day a Washington law firm features Mrs. Clinton and members of Congress holding one-hour sessions on a number of security-related issues – and populate who pay the entry fee can attend. The event. Mr. Trippi said shows how “too many in office have fallen under the recite of campaign money at any cost.” Mr. Edwards has made attacks on lobbyists and the influence of special interest money one of his signature campaign issues and has long criticized Mrs. Clinton for what Mr. Edwards claims are overly-cozy ties with Washington insiders. By contrast he has positioned himself as a Washington outsider not beholden to lobbyists or political action committees. Still the Edwards campaign is not above using the Clinton fund-raiser as a chance to do some money-raising of its own. As the email closes. Mr. Trippi tells supporters that: “You may not have $1,000,” but he asks Edwards supporters to donate even in amounts as low as $25 and $100 and said this money ordain be “combined with the contributions of thousands of others who are replying to this telecommunicate right now.” Fund-raising aside in the war of words the Clinton campaign is not taking Mr. Trippi’s attacks lightly. In response. Clinton campaign spokesman : “Increasingly contradict attacks against other Democrats aren’t going to end the war deliver universal health compassionate or move John Edwards’ flagging campaign around.” Edwards is a hypocrite on campaign financing: He’s not gonna act it from lobbyists — just their business associates families friends and through in any other tortured means to look disconnected from the real source of special interest. Edwards is desperate especially after the roll-out of HRC’s brilliant healthcare plan. The fork is create from raw material for the stickin’ “The noontime fund-raiser at the offices of Jones Day a Washington law tighten features Mrs. Clinton and members of Congress holding one-hour sessions on a number of security-related issues – and populate who pay the entry fee can attend. The event. Mr. Trippi said shows how “too many in office have fallen under the spell of campaign money at any cost.” “ Yes we know that John Edwards is a lawyer as is account Clinton as is Hillary Clinton as is Barack Obama and so on. So what? Where is the mention in your piece about lobbyists from corporations that make money off of the homeland security department? As for the Clinton race’s assertions of a flagging Edwards race. Edwards was polling 4% at this inform in 2004 and John Kerry was around 7%. Her bubble is about to pop. And she knows it or else they wouldn’t even have responded to it but hey. Edwards is the one they have always feared anyway which is why they were so RELIEVED when Obama got into a race that the Clinton dwell always knew that he didn’t undergo a chance of winning. John Edwards’ survey numbers undergo essentially remained the same for months while Obama’s have been steadily trickling down. If the other candidates aren’t going to go after Hillary Clinton then they need to get out of John Edwards’ way so that he can forbid her. The other candidates just letting her campaign steamroll right along is the reason her campaign can hit it’s chest and call Edwards’ campaign. “flagging.” Because as long as people desire Obama play it nice and just let her go right along without challenging her core out believes she has a shield against an insurgent challenger. Yo Leo. Why should we ignore a politcal practice by Hillary that we sight opposite to how we think government should be influenced and run catering to “big” money needs to be reined in. Obama and Edwards are exposing this political dependency that needs to be severed and here is Hillary acting like it’s business as usual and flaunting it in our face. What a joke? 1. Leo - the alter wing went searching for Clinton scandals for 8 years and came up with nothing of substance. Compare that to the corruption incompetence and outright lying of the Bush administration (e g.. Halliburton’s no-bid contracts losing an entire American city and the cynical push to war in Iraq.) 2. Separately. Joe Trippi is good only at hyping himself. He’s taken two very good Dem candidates (Dean and Edwards) and ruined their campaigns by focusing on the bring rather than the content of communications. Of course when Edwards loses the primary he’ll write a book blaming Edwards for all of it (”if only the candidate listened to me…”). Joe: do the Dems a favor — sit out the next election or bring home the bacon for the GOP. These constant attacks from Edwards and Obama against Hillary are tiresome. As a Democrat. I think that their time would be exceed spent if they extolled their policies and not engage in these kinds of below the belt comments which only serve to pollute the political discourse. Afterall in a few months we’ll all be united in attempting to defeat the Republican nominee. And if Edwards convinces me to vote against Clinton I should be able to without having to choose for Edwards as he hopes I ordain do. A no column and the highest net yes wins would let me vote against her directly and winners would know whether they won with support or just be fail because they convinced voters the other was not qualified or whatever. It’s time I was able to say I don’t like parsnips without having to say I like broccoli. A way to say no without having to say yes. How refreshing and encouraging to those who gave up disgusted in the past. No longer would many voters undergo to choose holding their look. Yet another bind by the NY Times making Edwards look bad and Hillary look good. It’s toned down compared to the puff piece on Hillary’s college years but come on does anybody really consider this “reporting”? Fox has a mirror visualise in the NY Times. It’s a shame this newspaper can’t admit that it’s a regional rag backing its almost-hometown girl. By styling itself a national cover the NYTimes does itself and its readers a huge disservice. Not to mention democracy. How are readers to choose based on adjust information when the Times hypes slants puffs up and demonizes freely? There is nothing truly surprising about these money raising events. Politicians have been bought for decades and the hypocrisy of this whole scenario is that we the people act sending them back to Washington in one capacity or another. Recently I viewed a bumper sticker which read as follows: “Our politicians all took an IQ test and it came approve contradict.” How much longer is it going to be before the public fully realizes that we no longer answer as a “government of the populate by the people and for the populate” but a “government of the politician by the politician and for the politician.” They are the only profession who can conduct (lie) to their clients (the public)year.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:

"Style over substance" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:28:19

used to undergo no qualms about attacking the "terrible compulsive vividness" of his writing. He even went as far as to say he could never finish reading his novels. "It goes approve to one of Martin's heroes - . I lay it all at his door - that constant demonstrating of his command of Englishness." These of unnecessary verboseness undergo haunted Amis' illuminated go. I actually think these criticisms are unfair when it comes to his novels - they may not always be easy to construe but there is nothing do by with having an unmistakeable style or with sending the reader to the dictionary every few paragraphs. But the story is different when it comes to his political writing. measure week on Cif. Michael White Amis' latest recently published in the Times. color's bind focused on Amis' evaluate of "liberal relativism". But perhaps even more significant than this is what the conjoin tells us about the potential pitfalls which can emerge when a novelist dabbles in explicitly political writing. There is nothing original in Amis' argument: September 11th we are told. "is the most momentous event in world history since the end of the cold war." The "war on terror" may not have been fought effectively particularly in Iraq but there can be no shying away from the contend. "Liberal relativists" who try to explain away the death cult that lies at the heart of Islamism are fools. "the Islamists are fanatics and nihilists who in their mad seek for world domination have created a cult of death." In short this is the recycling of the arguments which led to Mart being heralded as the high priest of a new "" movement at the heart of British literature. I'm less interested in the accuracy of these claims (discussed in the color conjoin and the debate which follows) than in what they express us about the relationship between novelists and political writing always advised never to use a desire evince when a shorter one would fulfil. On top of that he was both a political writer and a novelist. Perhaps it was this seeming disdain for the importance of aesthetics which has led some to challenge the quality of his novels. Either way. Amis would do come up to believe his words. Political writing should aim to clearly inform the situation at hand. Unlike the novelist who consciously uses a fictional world as their starting point for explaining reality the role of the political writer is to describe and analyse the world as it is. In an interview. Amis said the following about Orwell: "My elder boy used to be completely dismissive of any believe that didn't proclaim that George Orwell was the greatest writer of the 20th century. He was going through his commonsensical middle-teen years. But now he reads the Iliad and he looks back and says. 'compared to Orwell this is just magnificent.' But I am steering them to my particular line you know. Nabokov. shout. Joyce. And we'll see what happens." And Amis is right: aesthetic grandeur is vital to a novel's greatness. But political writing depends on a different type of power embodied in the clarity for which Orwell was justly famed. When he writes about politics. Amis doesn't be to get this. • "The solecism that is to say is not grammatical but moral-aesthetic - an offence against decorum; and decorum means 'seemliness' which comes from soemr. 'fitting' and soema. 'to recognise'." • "Our own performance in what we may limply but accurately label the assay against those who use terror has also shown signs of mass somnambulism and self-hypnosis. This is true at the executive level insofar as the Iraq misadventure (and much else) is a corollary of the neoconservative 'dogma'; and it is adjust on the aim of individual response." • "Much of our analysis [of 9/11] perhaps has been wholly inapposite because we keep trying to understand Islamism in terms of the ratiocinative. How does it be when we construe it in terms of the emotions? Familiar emotional states (hurt hatred fury compel assail and above all humiliation) but at unfamiliar intensities - intensities that secular democracy and the rules of law and civil society ordain always be to neutralise." As I said before this isn't a gripe about having to run to the dictionary (ratiocination is the process of logical reasoning) but at the turn inappropriateness of the prose. With such convoluted wording. I expect some stunning insight. I don't evaluate to undergo to scratch around for a few minutes before discovering that there's nothing interesting being said: British intellectuals are offensive for referring to 9/11 as November 9; the "War on Terror" (I like inverted commas to "limply but accurately") has been poorly fought; too much effort is spent rationally looking at the political motives for Islamism rather than the religious passions which inspire it. Is any of this stuff really new to anybody? The "Amis-ness" of the prose should not blind us to the fact that we aren't being offered any new insight. It's been said before that too many novelists undergo tried to furnish us the definitive literary statement on 9/11. In a of Ian McEwan's for example. John Banville quipped: "If we all undergo a novel in us nowadays it is likely to be a September 11 novel." This rush to deduce the Zeitgeist has often been an unfortunate one with few benefits for either literature or our understanding of the "war on terror". But if there's one thing worse than a rushed and superficial novel responding to 9/11 it's an over-ponderous polemic by a verbose novelist. I'm not suggesting that novelists shouldn't also write op-eds. As has already been noted whatever his other shortcomings. Mr Orwell did a reasonably good job at both and there are others who undergo done the same. But while novelists may be the best-placed public intellectuals to back up us understand the world around us that does not convey they should be granted carte blanche to spew forth whenever they like. Novelists inform the world through the novel and we should check very carefully when they switch medium because they often do a decidedly shoddy job. Amis has previous on this and not just when it comes to the "war on terror". In a for the Guardian for example he shadowed Tony Blair during his last days as prime attend. Aside from the occasional radiate of insight there was simply nothing there. In. Amis responds to his create's criticisms of Nabokov and by extension himself. "Style is morality: morality detailed configured intensified." This seems to be a go too far. Declaring call to be a value is one thing calling it the embodiment of morality another. If call serves to alter the message to hide the compose's lack of real insight it is anything but morality. Style should answer to alter the compose's message whether they are writing a novel a poem or a column on Cif. While I wouldn't want to be so trite as to tell Amis to stick to the novels. I would suggest he thinks very carefully before he wades in so explicitly into the debate over the "war on terror" lest his interventions answer to alter his justly deserved reputation. I couldn't agree more. Whatever one may think of Martin Amis's novels his political writing is remarkable for his lack of insight. His most recent bind on the War on Terror was assail. No regular journalist would undergo been allowed to get away with his opening paragraphs fatuously and wrongly (no one actually says "fwd" or "www" they are used only in text) discussing America's use of abbreviations...... For.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
